Tag-Me-Thursdays: Goodreads Book Tag

Confession: This is my first book tag, so I went with an easy one that I’ve seen circulating! If you know of any other fun book tags, please share 🙂

23310751What was the last book you marked as ‘read’?

First & Then by Emma Mills

I finished this book yesterday and really enjoyed it as a fun, fluffy and fast read. It’s basically Pride & Prejudice in high school with lots of American football.

You can read my review here tomorrow!

24485589What are you ‘currently reading’?

Hunted by Meagan Spooner

I feel like I have been waiting for this book forever… and though I only got an hour of reading in so far, it is really meeting my high expectations so far. I feel like I’ll be counting the minutes to get through the work day and sink into the pages of this book.

What was the last book you marked as ‘to read’?

I marked a trilogy by Nicole Williams (Crush, Clash and Crash). These are tagged as young adult and new adult, so… ? I used the Epic Reads Book Recommender (FB Messenger App). If you haven’t used it before… it asks you a few questions and then gives you a recommendation, which you can ask for more like that, start over, etc. I asked by mood… something romantic. And this popped up. It looks really good. Wonder if it will help my Royals book hangover? (Thanks a lot Erin Watt.)

What book do you plan to read next?

Once I finish Hunted, I have a couple of unnamed arcs to read this weekend, but after that I have these beauties! Thanks to Penguin First to Read, I’ll be reading Flame in the Mist by Renee Ahdieh beginning Tuesday. This is one of those books where I will drop EVERYTHING I am reading to power through. I read an excerpt at the beginning of the year, and since I loved the Wrath & the Dawn duology… I just can’t even begin to express how excited I am for FITM.

After that it will depend on when my February Fairyloot arrives (yes, it’s still MIA. Maybe it is swimming over the Atlantic? haha.) So I really need to catch up on my January TBR and give Carve the Mark a good go. But if my FL arrives, I will likely be reading Empress of a Thousand Skies. I’ve heard so many good things!

Do you use the star rating system?

Yes, I sure do. It simplifies things. I guess as a Gryffindor, I don’t like it when people don’t use the guidelines and re-define it for themselves. Re-defining is fine on your own thing, such as your own rating system on your blog, but it doesn’t make sense to see on GR that 3 is “I like it” and change it to “Okay.” No– 2 stars is Okay, and 3 is Like. It’s confusing and messes up the ratings if you change what it means, and it doesn’t matter if you add your rating system in your review. That’s not where it counts.

But seriously. It takes a lot for me to rate something as 1 or 2 stars, as I generally won’t review something that I don’t like. So you have to really disturb me or piss me off as an author to get me to bother going onto GR and give you those star ratings. Usually I’ll just scrap the book from my lists so that we can forget about the whole thing.

Are you doing a reading challenge?

Yes, I love the GR challenge. I upped my game this year to 100 books (previously it was 20). I’m already 60 books in, so I think I may need to extend that goal a bit. I am absolutely loving how much reading I am getting done this year!

Do you have a wishlist?

Yes, and I have a pulse and breathe, in case that was the next obvious answer you needed.

crownWhat book do you plan to buy next?

According to my pre-orders, my next book purchase is A Crown of Wishes, the sequel to The Star Touched Queen. It comes out on 3/28. This is probably a pretty accurate next purchase unless I wander into a bookstore this week.

I think after that I’ll be waiting for my hardcover pre-order of Given to the Sea. I’ve already read it thanks to Penguin First to Read, but I will be reading it again once I have it in my hands! I love the book more and more as it simmers in my mind.

Do you have any favourite quotes?

Yes, so many faves. Especially the first one… I have “rattle the stars” everywhere in my writing space at home.

“You could rattle the stars,” she whispered. “You could do anything, if you only dared. And deep down, you know it, too. That’s what scares you most.” —Sarah J. Maas, Throne of Glass

“Some walks you have to take alone.”
—Suzanne Collins, Mockingjay

“That’s the thing about pain. It demands to be felt.”
—John Green, The Fault in Our Stars

“It’s like the people who believe they’ll be happy if they go and live somewhere else, but who learn it doesn’t work that way. Wherever you go, you take yourself with you. If you see what I mean.”
—Neil Gaiman, The Graveyard Book

“There are good days and hard days for me—even now. Don’t let the hard days win.”
― Sarah J. Maas, A Court of Mist and Fury

“I wonder if, even in my despair and hopelessness, I was never truly alone. I wonder if I was looking for this place—looking for you all.”
― Sarah J. Maas, A Court of Mist and Fury

“I would have come for you. And if I couldn’t walk, I’d crawl to you, and no matter how broken we were, we’d fight our way out together-knives drawn, pistols blazing. Because that’s what we do. We never stop fighting.”
― Leigh Bardugo, Crooked Kingdom

“You’re better that waffles, Matthias Helvar.”
A small smile curled the Fjerdan’s lips.
“Let’s not say things we don’t mean, my love.”
― Leigh Bardugo, Crooked Kingdom

“After all, you can only hold one person tight if you’re holding on with both hands.”
― Heidi Heilig, The Girl from Everywhere

Who are your favourite authors?

Sarah J. Maas, Haruki Murakami, Leigh Bardugo, Marie Lu, Ursula LeGuin, Mindy McGinnis, Renee Ahdieh, Nicola Yoon, Neil Gaiman, Patrick Ness, JK Rowling, Anne Rice and so many others!

Have you joined any groups?

Yes, I am in the OwlCrate and Fairyloot groups, though mostly as a lurker!

Do you think Goodreads could do better?

Of course. I love that they added the re-read option, but they could make it a little more user friendly (just saying.) All the same, now I don’t have to use obscure ‘sneak peeks’ and chapter samples to mark a new read. Because that’s what I was doing. And people probably think I’m patting myself on the back for reading “Chapter 1” of a book, but really it was the whole book again.

So that’s it for this book tag! Whew. It was fun. Hats off to all the people who also do this in videos… I can’t even imagine how many takes it would be for me to produce a video. I say things backwards all the time, and would need to be all hyped up on coffee to be able to get words out in any sort of memorable way. So good on you if that’s one of your talents!
