Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s theme is Top 10 Fandoms, or alternatively was 10 Reasons that X Fandom is the best. I will go with the first because I have love for a lot of fandoms! Most of mine revolve around movies, but there are a couple of book related ones as well.
Here we go, in no particular order.
Miyazaki / Studio Ghibli Fandom – I love all of Hayao Miyazaki’s films including My Neighbor Totoro (above left), Spirted Away (above right), Ponyo, Princess Mononoke, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Howl’s Moving Castle… for me, his films can do no wrong. And I have it on my bucket list to go to the Studio Ghibli museum in Tokyo, and buy everything I possibly can that is related to these films.
Next two fandoms: Star Trek and Star Wars. I grew up watching all of these movies (and shows, in the case of Star Trek). While I do prefer the newer films (thank you Chris Pine) for Star Trek, they are all classics. For Star Wars, I much prefer episodes 4-6 before they were re-edited, and I love the J.J. Abrams installments so far. Sci-fi makes me think of hanging out with my family as a kid, watching movies on Saturday nights, and that is fine by me.
The World of Quentin Tarantino. Reservoir Dogs got me hooked, Pulp Fiction is one of my most favorite quotable films, and Kill Bill 1 & 2 are epic in their mixture of anime, action and tremendous storytelling. I could go on for pages about all of his films, but I’m sure if you’re a fan, you don’t need me to say anymore.
Marvel Universe – I much prefer Marvel over DC, so hate me if you must. Guardians of the Galaxy pictured here, but my other favorites on team Marvel include Deadpool and Ironman.
Sailor Moon. I want to say this was really my first fandom that came about due to my own devices… but I don’t think that’s true. Pretty sure my brother introduced Sailor Moon to me because it was on before Dragon Ball Z. So we watched them both together. Either way, I love this series.
South Park – Staying in the animated vein, South Park has been around for most of my life. Their first animated clip for the Spirit of Christmas started it all, and I remember my brother emailing it to me to watch (he was away at college). Some seasons are better than others, of course, but they have always been entertaining, and honestly the past few seasons have shown some of the greatest episodes. (PC Principal… the Whole Foods… and anything with Butters = the best). And of course I can’t hear Lorde now without thinking of Randy Marsh.
Game of Thrones. I hope this is one of those that ends well enough that I won’t be mad for being a fan for so long. SOOOOO LONG. These books take forever to come out. And they are so incredibly involved. But, they are good, and the TV series is great. (So great that we now call is Game of Thrones instead of it’s actual book series title.)
Harry Potter – This is an obvious one, but it needed to be said. I really enjoyed the majority of the books (basically from Azkaban on are all golden, the first two were good-ish.) And now that we have Newt Scamander in the movie world, I am a happy girl once more. Bring on the next Fantastic Beasts!
The World of Sarah J. Maas – You all know by now that I love her books so much, both ToG and ACOTAR series, and so I couldn’t skip her on my list. I know it’s an odder fandom, and more of the items to buy for it are on Etsy, Society6 and Redbubble, but even so… it has a fierce following. I can’t wait to see what they do with the Queen of Shadows tv series!
So that’s 10! I had a bunch of others that just weren’t quite ringing true for what I love now (like The Walking Dead, because for me everything after the Governor in the comics was just a repeat of everything else), but it was fun to go back and look through all the choices.
What is your favorite fandom?
